Using an Egg Donor
An egg donor is typically a young, healthy woman who agrees to donate her eggs to another woman whose eggs are not viable, but is capable of carrying a child. Once the donor’s eggs have been retrieved, they’re fertilized and implanted in the intended mother and she carries the baby to term. Once the child is born, the woman who carried it is the mother, despite the child being genetically related to the donor.
Using a Gestational Surrogate
If a woman has healthy eggs but is unable to carry her child, she may choose to hire a gestational surrogate — a woman who carries the baby to term, then gives the child to the woman who provided the egg. Unlike egg donors, a gestational surrogate is not biologically related to the child because she did not supply the egg.
Using Both an Egg Donor and Gestational Surrogate
If a woman doesn’t have eggs or her eggs are unhealthy, and she is unable to carry a child, she may use both an egg donor and a gestational surrogate. In this instance, a donated egg from woman “A” would be fertilized and implanted in woman “B” who then carries the baby to term and gives the child to the intended mother (woman “C”).
In every instance of ART, the intended couple/mother/father becomes the child’s parents, regardless of who the child is genetically related to.
